If you were arrested for driving drunk this Thanksgiving, you’re hardly alone. Police in the Denver area have ramped up patrols through mid-December, and their extra efforts are catching a lot of people.

 

The Thanksgiving holiday is known for an increase in alcohol-related offenses. In 2016, Colorado police arrested 518 drivers under suspicion of DUI charges from Nov. 18-28. They made 57 arrests in the Denver area alone.

 

A Colorado DWAI charge may not be quite as severe as a DUI, but it is still very serious. If convicted, you could face jail time, fines, and the suspension of your license. You will also be left with a criminal record that compromises future employment, housing and child custody prospects.

 

How do you defend against a DWAI charge, though? You know that it’s different than a DUI,

 

On Wednesday, August 9, a number of new Colorado laws went into effect, including but not limited to:

 

  • HB17-1179, which allows someone to break into a locked car to free a distressed child or animal.
  • HB17-1266, which allows people who were convicted of marijuana possession or use prior to legalization to pay to have their criminal records sealed.
  • SB17-008, which legalizes the possession of gravity knives and switchblade

 

Since July 4th is one of the most dangerous driving holidays in Colorado, officials were particularly vigilant over the holiday this year, cracking down on DUI suspects with additional patrols and checkpoints.
